Supporting repressive dictators all over the globe for many years either because they gave sweetheart deals to American businesses , or they vowed to be anti-communist , put us on the wrong side , opposing those who truly wanted freedom so often that the rest of the world caught on to our act .

The 'Truth, Justice and American Way' is merely a smokescreen to keep people quiet while they're being fleeced for profit by international corporations. This country was founded upon the principals of profit for profits' sake without regard to human sacrifice from the very beginning. I suppose if one wanted one could trace this attitude back to the beginning of mankind.
In supporting repressive dictatorships this guaranteed a cheap supply of raw materials from which profits could be made. In engineering the overthrow of representative democracies the US has ensured there to be no disruption in supplies from which profits are generated. The logo on our money should not be "In God We Trust" but "In Profits We Flourish".
And the ends, in this case, will always justify the means.
Q. Can someone help me ponder when...
A. When we formed a government.
Q. ...can the country get it back?
A. Can't get back true freedom as long as it's being metered out to us.
We can only start to move towards representative government by enacting total campaign finance reform . NO campaign contributions can be allowed ,all candidates are given the same small fixed amount to spend by the government and cannot exceed that , even if it is their own money . One term limits and the eliminating of all lobbyists need to be enacted also .
